App Review: Theme+ Brings Your Personality To Your Windows Phone

wp_ss_20141009_0001wp_ss_20141009_0002

Sure, the stock batch of 20+ colors on most Windows Phone devices are plenty for some people. The ability to add custom imaging to tiles in Windows Phone 8.1 is pretty cool as well. What isn’t in the OS yet, and thank goodness that Aälejandro Díazs picked up the slack on this one, is gradient fills. I’m not talking about just a little fade, but a serious mix of colors to that background. What Theme+ brings to the tablet should be purchased by Microsoft and built in to the core OS. It is that good.

wp_ss_20141009_0003wp_ss_20141009_0009

Theme+ is about the easiest thing on the planet to use. You click it, select your patter and choose your colors. From there, Theme+ takes care of the rest and makes a gorgeous tile background for your enjoyment. The install size of Theme+ is less than 1 MB, so resources aren’t an issue at all. In fact, unlike some other system altering Apps, I noticed no issues at all running this with any of the three devices I tested it on.

Theme+ does carry a $1.29 price tag, which for some might be considered a bit steep for a basic altering program, but I wouldn’t let that stop me from grabbing this beautiful App. Simplistic, functional and the fact that it is just downright fun to play with keeps Theme+ at the top of the home screen Apps for me. You can download it from the link below.

Game Review: Stunt Star Turns You Into Evil Kinevel

wp_ss_20141004_0006

Growing up, did you ever want to be a stuntman? Better yet, when you were little did you want to be Evil Kinevel? You remember him, that daredevil motorcycle jumper that leapt over school buses and big shark infested tanks before the X-Games made it seem silly. Well, if that was your dream, Three Phase Interactive Pty Ltd has you covered with their Stunt Star release!

wp_ss_20141004_0008

Stunt Star is the heroic journey of one man’s quest to become the best stunt man in the world. Ok, maybe that’s a bit extreme, but you get the idea. In this physics based motorcycle classic, you use the gas and brake to guide your rider through the various jumps and obstacles to become the greatest stunt rider ever. Sounds simple enough, but how did the folks at Three Phase do?

wp_ss_20141004_0005

The game play during Stunt Star is nothing short of frustratingly awesome. The first few levels are just instructional, like how to use the brake and the gas. As soon as the basics are done, you start jumping, and jumping you shall do. Using the right combination of throttle and brake, you keep your bike level and ready to land. Of course, using the turbo charging rockets and other supplied goodies will make doing a few flips and turns much easier. Remember, those flips and turns are what makes your score better in Stunt Star.

wp_ss_20141004_0009

Once you’ve completed your jump, you need to stop your bike between the poles and as close to the flag as possible before your time runs out. Do this and you could be the next big Stunt Star.Fail, and your boss pops on with a corny joke and a repeat button.

wp_ss_20141004_0010

Overall, Stunt Star is a great game that offers challenges to just about any skill level out there. The $2.99 asking price might be a tad on the aggressive side, but with the quality of the game and having zero issues running it across my bevy of devices, makes the one time $3 purchase worth the investment. The 32MB file size is also well worth the space on a device should you choose to partake of this great title.

Game Review: Sky Patrol Packs A Few Surprises

wp_ss_20140916_0015 1

I downloaded Sky Patrol from Beartrap Games Limited expecting a typical overhead shooter style game. Something in the Raiden or Space Shooter X family. After watching the loading screen, I was greeted with something that was anything but what I was expecting.

wp_ss_20140916_0017 1

First off, figuring out the controls was difficult, because it wasn’t what I expected. That said, once I understood how the game worked, it became very easy. Sky Patrol is actually a great mix between an overhead shooter and those crazy “tracer” games like Pirate’s Plunder 2. Instead of blindly shooting rounds off and destroying everything in your path, you trace your missile’s path from the yellow area at the bottom of the screen out to your target. It take a few shots to get it down, but once you do, it’s pretty intuitive.

wp_ss_20140916_0018

Sky Patrol is definitely one of those frustrating titles that you really want to master quickly, but for many that may not happen. The skill level required for this game is literally one of a 5 year old, but somehow the developers managed to make it an extreme challenge to ‘win’ this one. That’s not a bad thing. Sky Patrol keeps you on your toes and you have to watch every part of your display or you will end up toast.

wp_ss_20140916_0020 1

Fortunately, the only failure here is me. I would give Sky Patrol and its 52MB download a total thumbs up for anyone that is a fan of tracer games. If you’re an overhead shooter fan, you might want to give it a try as well, but with the $1.99 price tag, games like Space Shooter X might be a better option for you. That said, the $2 download price is well worth supporting a developer for making such a challenging game and the mechanics involved in this will only lead to more amazing titles in the future.
